Freddy Hubbard's Red Clay: which key?

Hello every one,
I am currently puzzled by the Red Clay's score in the Real Book that starts in the key of C-. The tune is on different versions (Freddy Hubbard original in the studio, live, with VSOP, ...) played in Db-, no idea where a C- version comes from.
Any idea?

Sanctuary by Wayne Shorter

Hi there!

I've been studying on Wayne Shorter's "Sanctuary", which has been performed on Miles Davis' "Circle in the Round" and "Bitches Brew" as well as Wayne Shorter's "Footprints Live!". The tune was originally composed in 3/4 meter, but Miles reworked its head into a free-tempo ballad on his "Bitches Brew" album. Due to the rubato rendition, the melody - as it's supposed to be written in Wayne's original lead sheet - is quite difficult to transcribe.

On Wayne's later performances (e.g. Footprints Live!) the song is played in 4/4 time, which gives a good picture of the structure and the phrasing of the melody. However, the "opening phrase" that can be heard on "Bitches Brew" and "Circle in the Round" is omitted on Wayne's later renditions. On "Footprints Live!" and on the concert video clip (see below) a rubato section precedes the head. The melody is played over D pedal in bass, while the static chords change from altered dominant (D7alt.) harmony to major or lydian (DMaj7) and from dorian (D-7) to lydian dominant (D7#11) harmonies in relation to the pedal note. I'm not aware how "open" the changes are and how does the original changes look like, but I made a rough assessment of the harmonic progression (see the transcription). (Also, the melodic rhythm in the transcription hints at 3/4 time.)

Now, I want you to check up on the harmony of this song and come forward with a sensible chord progression on this site. ;)

As a follow-up to a thread on the AAJ ‘theory and analysis’ forum, I present my first attempt at taking my blues in a ‘slightly jazzy’ direction. As a blues bass player using Finale Print Music to chart out arrangements for walking bass practice, I have finally attempted to add a melody line. But as I mentioned in an earlier thread, when starting out with a basic blues arrangement, and when working with such simple ‘chord-tone melodies’ (the melodic equivalent of “moon, spoon, in june” lyric writing), I can’t imagine that this exact melody line hasn’t been used a hundred times before. My beginner’s goal was to come up with a melody line that ties the “A” and “B” parts together, instead of sounding like two songs squashed together.

As I mentioned in the other thread, I wish that there was a software program that could read my music and reply: “Hey dummy, you just re-wrote ‘Satin Doll’”? But in my case it is more likely that I just re-wrote “how much is that doggy in the window” (why isn’t there a “complete beginner’s” forum to make this less embarrassing?)

As the melody writing is just a hobby, my primary goal will be to learn how to create walking lines that support the melody, instead of just outline the chord shapes. This ‘learning thing’ never ends, does it?

I am a amateur guitarist and have just recently been trying to learn something about jazz. I am listening to and attempting to analyze the first four or five measures of " So What " on a CD by Miles Davis entitled " Kind of Blue ". Although I play the guitar I have access to a keyboard and have been trying to accurately transcribe the first four or five measures of this song without much success. The intro is decievingly simple; I can't seem to get it exactly as Bill Evans plays it. I was hoping someone could post a transcription. I would really appreciate it. For someone who knows what they are doing this is probably a piece of cake... many thanks

Need Gospel Jazz Compositions

Hello All,

I recently joined FJI and noticed almost immediately that there's a wealth of information here that will benefit me. I'm an experienced musician but consider myself a novice when it comes to jazz.

Anyway, I lead a male acapella sextet and we have recently reorganized ourselves and are ready to sing again (well after everybody went away for school and is now back). We're in need of good quality gospel jazz renditions set in 5 or 6 part harmonies. Most of us in the group are musicians and do write our own stuff every once in a while, but we're looking to work with anybody who's interested in sharing their music with us.

It is our hope to record what we do. If you're out there and do write such music please do get in touch with me or post a reply and let's collaborate. Thanks.

I think as long as Macs have been around, they have had the built-in capability to save the image on the screen to a file just by typing Command-Shift-3. There are other variations of that which would be useful like cropping, etc. and table of these is shown below.

Scorch on Intel Macs

Scorch on Intel Macs

When you're using Scorch in the Safari or Firefox web browser, you may get an alert that says you need a plug-in file - even though you know you have the plug-in already. This is because the newer browsers are running as Universal programs, but many plug-ins including Scorch are currently PowerPC-only software.

Therefore, until a Universal version of Scorch is available please run your web browser as a Rosetta application. To do this, quit Safari and open its Get Info window in the Finder by going to MacintoshHD, Applications and clicking on the application icon and press Command-I. Choose the Open Using Rosetta option.
The next time you launch Safari, it will open using Rosetta.

If you have been running an older version of Firefox and have since updated it to 1.5.0.6, it may not have the Rosetta option described above. To see the option you will need to delete your current installation of Firefox and download a fresh installation of Firefox from the Firefox download page.
